Tim Herman
Olathe, Kansas · First knife, 1978
Tim Herman has been making investment-grade folding knives in Olathe, Kansas since 1978. The work sits at the boundary between knifemaking and jewelry — exotic materials, engraved bolsters, immaculate tolerances, and a scale of craftsmanship more often found in a watchmaker’s shop than a knife bench.
What distinguishes Herman is that he does his own engraving and carving. In a trade where pairing a maker with a separate master engraver is the standard route to embellishment, Herman brings both disciplines to the same hand. The coherence that results — between blade geometry, handle choice, and surface decoration — is something collaboration rarely achieves.
He is not prolific, and he does not take orders casually. Finding a piece at this level, in this condition, requires patience and luck in equal measure.
“He does it all.”
