Jan Hafinec

Ján Hafinec forges his own steel in Slovakia — Damascus, San Mai, carbon steel with hand-drawn hamon lines. Every step is sole authorship: the forging, the grinding, the heat treatment, the handle work. Nothing is contracted out. The knife that arrives is the work of one man’s hands from raw billet to finished edge.

His hamon work has drawn praise from established makers worldwide — the ghosted temper lines on his carbon blades are the kind of detail that separates a bladesmith from a knife assembler. He works with natural materials — desert ironwood, walrus ivory, stabilized burl — and his fit and finish runs well above his price point, which will not last.
