Ted Dowell
Bend, Oregon · 1929–2012 · Knifemakers’ Guild Founder
Ted Dowell made the first modern integral knife in 1972 — blade, guard, and pommel machined from a single piece of steel. It was a technical achievement that became an entire category. Over forty-two years he made roughly three thousand knives from his shop in Bend, Oregon. He was a founding member of the Knifemakers’ Guild and was inducted into the Cutlery Hall of Fame.
This integral is engraved by Julie Warenski — her signature and scroll work visible on the bolsters, the TMD monogram set into the relief. The ivory scales and red fiber spacer are classic Dowell. Two names, one knife, both irreplaceable.
He invented the integral. Everything since is a footnote.
